In the past, Kāśyapa, the son of a certain riṣi was run over by a chariot that belonged to a vaiśya. The chariot hit him and Kāśyapa fell down. He was greatly pained because of the incident.

He thought – ‘What is the use of this helpless life? I’ll die right away, right at this spot!’. He greatly lamented for the troubles that had come his way.

ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಇವರಿಬ್ಬರ ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಅನುವಾದಗಳನ್ನು ಸ್ವತಂತ್ರವಾಗಿ ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸೋಣ. ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಬಿಡಿಮುತ್ತನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

ಚತುರ್ಮುಖಮುಖಾಂಭೋಜವನಹಂಸವಧೂರ್ಮಮ |

ಮಾನಸೇ ರಮತಾಂ ನಿತ್ಯಂ ಸರ್ವಶುಕ್ಲಾ ಸರಸ್ವತೀ ||

ನಾಲ್ಮೊಗನ ಸಾಲ್ಮೊಗದ ತಾವರೆಯ ಬನದೊಳಗೆ

ರಾಜಿಸುವ ಹಂಸರಮಣಿ

ಚಿರಕಾಲ ವಿಹರಿಸಲಿ ನನ್ನ ಮಾನಸದೊಳಗೆ

Here poetry isn’t the proverbial tough nut to crack. One need not raise their eyebrows remembering illustrious poets like Pampa, Ranna, aḍakṣarī, Harihara, Rudra-bhaṭṭa, Nāraṇappa (Kumāra-vyāsa). Our aim here is some light poetry. In these we see hints of prosody here and there; alliteration is present in a haphazard manner. The purpose here is to highlight some light compositions of people which they normally don’t highlight themselves.

Tradition and Contemporary Science

Though Srinivasa Sastri had great respect for our śāstra-s and tradition, people who knew him thought that he had some disdain for ordinary scholars. Once Sastri was supposedly quite harsh in his speech at a scholarly assembly in Bangalore. He delivered the talk at the assembly hall in the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, Bangalore. The talk was organised by Sastri’s friend D. Venkataramayya.

ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ ಈ ಎರಡು ಕೃತಿಗಳ ಹಲಕೆಲವು ಪದ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ತೌಲನಿಕವಾಗಿ ಸಮೀಕ್ಷಿಸಬಹುದು. ಮೊದಲಿಗೆ ಇಬ್ಬರೂ ಅನುವಾದಕ್ಕೆ ತೆಗೆದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಸಮಾನಪದ್ಯಗಳನ್ನು ಪರಿಶೀಲಿಸೋಣ.

ಕರಾರವಿಂದೇನ ಪದಾರವಿಂದಂ

      ಮುಖಾರವಿಂದೇ ವಿನಿವೇಶಯಂತಮ್ |

ವಟಸ್ಯ ಪತ್ರಸ್ಯ ಪುಟೇ ಶಯಾನಂ

      ಬಾಲಂ ಮುಕುಂದಂ ಮನಸಾ ಸ್ಮರಾಮಿ ||

ಹಸ್ತಕಮಲದಿಂದ ತನ್ನ ಚರಣಕಮಲವ
