The following incident happened in the 1930s, when Śrī Candraśekhara-bhāratī Mahāsvāmi adorned the Śāradā-pīṭha at Sringeri. The Mahāsvāmi’s liking for and support of scholarship is well known. He took great interest in the development of Gīrvāṇa-prauḍha-vidyābhivardhinī Pāṭhaśālā that is housed in the Bengaluru Śaṅkara-maṭha. Back in the day, this Pāṭhaśālā was one of the greatest centres of traditional learning.
‘ಕರ್ಣಾಟ-ಭಾರತ-ಕಥಾಮಂಜರಿ’, ಕುಮಾರವ್ಯಾಸನೆಂದು ಬಿರುದು ಪಡೆದ ಗದುಗಿನ ನಾರಾಯಣಪ್ಪನಿಂದ ವಿರಚಿಸಲ್ಪಟ್ಟು, ‘ಗದುಗಿನ ಭಾರತ’ ವೆಂದೇ ಖ್ಯಾತಿ ಪಡೆದು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ಹಳ್ಳಿಹಳ್ಳಿಯಲ್ಲಿಯೂ ಜನರ ನಾಲಿಗೆಯ ಮೇಲೆ ನಲಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವ ಮಹಾಕಾವ್ಯ. ಕನ್ನಡ-ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ-ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದ ತೃತೀಯ ನವೋದಯದಲ್ಲಿ ವೈಷ್ಣವಭಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ತನ್ನ ಕಾವ್ಯಗಂಗೆಯ ಮೂಲಕ ಪುನರುತ್ಥಾನಗೊಳಿಸಿದವನು ಕುಮಾರವ್ಯಾಸನೆಂದು ಅನೇಕ ವಿದ್ವಾಂಸರ ಅಭಿಮತ. ಕುಮಾರವ್ಯಾಸನ ಕಾವ್ಯದ ಬಗೆಗೆ ಬರೆಯಬಲ್ಲ ಪಾಂಡಿತ್ಯವಾಗಲೀ, ಭಾಷಾ-ಪ್ರೌಢಿಮೆಯಾಗಲೀ ಇರದಿದ್ದರೂ, ನನ್ನ ಆಯುಷ್ಯದ ಈ ಅವಧಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೃತಿಯನ್ನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಓದಿದಾಗ ನನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲಿ ರೂಪುಗೊಂಡ ಕೆಲವು ಅನಿಸಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನಿಲ್ಲಿ ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಈ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆಗಳು ಕೃತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಂಡು ಬರುವ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾತ್ರ ಆಧರಿಸಿರುವುವು.
DVG practiced journalism for an unremitting seven decades; from the beginning, he fiercely upheld the nationalistic spirit in both speech and writing. From 1913-1920 when D.V.G. was editing the English biweekly Karnataka, this was the tenet that he declared: “The newspapers of our country need not imitate their counterparts in America or other foreign countries. Our papers need to conduct themselves in a manner that is consonant with our social circumstances and the nature and traditions of our people.”
ভাগবত পুরাণে কৃষ্ণের প্রাসাদে কুচেলার আগমন নিয়ে একটি মর্মস্পর্শী অধ্যায় আছে। সান্দীপনীর গুরুকুলে কৃষ্ণ এবং কুচেলা সহপাঠী ছিলেন। যখন কৃষ্ণ রাজার ন্যায় জীবনযাপন করছেন, তখন কুচেলা অত্যন্ত দারিদ্রের মধ্যে। কুচেলা কতকটা সাহায্যপ্রার্থী হয়েই পুরাতন বন্ধু কৃষ্ণের কাছে এসেছিলেন, কিন্তু যখন তিনি কৃষ্ণের সঙ্গে মিলিত হলেন, তখন আর সেকথা বলতে পারলেননা।
Duryodhana was alive catching on to his last few breaths. He had trouble breathing and was being eaten alive by foxes, wolves and other wild animals. He was trying his best to shoo them away and hold on to his last moments. Kṛpa and Aśvatthāmā were touched looking at his sad state. Aśvatthāmā said – ‘O dear king! You are Balarāma’s student! How did that mere cook get a chance to beat you up so much? Time and Fate are very powerful. What kind of a man is Dharmarāja – did he simply stand around looking at you getting kicked in an adhārmic manner?
ಶೇಷಣ್ಣನವರ ಜೀವನದ ಕಡೆಯ ದಶಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಬಂದೆರಗಿದ ಆಘಾತವೆಂದರೆ ಅವರ ಧರ್ಮಪತ್ನಿ ಶಾರದಮ್ಮನವರ ವಿಸ್ಮೃತಿರೋಗ. ಎಷ್ಟೆಲ್ಲ ಸಂಪ್ರದಾಯದ ಹಾಡು, ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ, ಗೀತಗಳನ್ನು ವಾಚೋ ವಿಧೇಯವಾಗಿ ಇರಿಸಿಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಒಂದು ಅಕ್ಷರವನ್ನೂ ಮಾತನಾಡಲಾಗದಂಥ ಭೀಕರವಿಸ್ಮೃತಿ ಬಂದೆರಗಿತ್ತು. ಅವರಿಗೆ ತಮ್ಮ ದೇಹದ ಮೇಲೆಯೇ ನಿಯಂತ್ರಣವಿರುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಹೊರಟರೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಬರುವ ದಾರಿ ಗೊತ್ತಾಗುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅನುದಿನದ ಗೃಹಕೃತ್ಯಗಳಿರಲಿ, ವೈಯಕ್ತಿಕವಾದ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಲು ಕೂಡ ಅರಿವಾಗುತ್ತಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಇದೊಂದು ಬಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಬೆಳೆದ ಮಗುವಿನ ಪರಿಸ್ಥಿತಿ. ಇಂಥ ಅನಾರೋಗ್ಯದ ತೊಂದರೆ ಎಂಥದ್ದೆಂಬುದನ್ನು ನಾನು ಆ ಬಳಿಕ ನನ್ನ ತಾಯಿಗೆ ಇದೇ ರೀತಿಯ ಸ್ಥಿತಿ ಬಂದಾಗಲೇ ಅರಿತದ್ದು, ಅನುಭವಿಸಿದ್ದು.
I’ve already told that the main aspects of his ingenuity were his wisdom and his conduct. One of his key principles was the prominence he gave to the capability of creating happiness. He wanted to interact with everyone in a way that would gladden them. None of his words have caused bitterness in anyone nor have they tarnished anyone’s image; in essence his policy was to ensure happiness in everyone as far as possible.
