Introduction to the Kathāmṛta – Part 4 – Bṛhat-kathā-śloka-saṃgraha and Pèruṅkadai

The Bṛhat-kathā-śloka-saṃgraha is peppered with light-hearted and sweet humour here and there. The work also delineates profound lives of the common men and is devoid of vulgarity. There is hardly any content that can classify as immoral or inappropriate. The descriptions that come as a part of the stories are apt, elevating and not very elaborate. The poet employs alaṅkāras that are not complex and are easy to comprehend. The story of Vatsarāja that occurs in this text is more beautiful compared to the Kashmir recension and is nicely worded and  well structured.

ಅವಧಾನಕಲೆಯ ಕಣ್ವ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಂಕಾ ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿ - 2

ನನ್ನ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಮಾತೆಲ್ಲ ಸಹಜವಾಗಿ ಅವಧಾನ, ಅವಧಾನಿ ಮತ್ತು ಅವಧಾನಕವಿತೆಗಳ ಸುತ್ತಲೇ ಸುಳಿಸುತ್ತುತ್ತಿತ್ತು. ಪ್ರಾಯಶಃ ಇದರಿಂದ ಅವರಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಉತ್ಕಟಾಸಕ್ತಿಯ ಅರಿವಾಗಿ ಉಲ್ಲಾಸದಿಂದ ತಮ್ಮ ಅನುಭವಗಳನ್ನೂ ವ್ಯಾಸಂಗದ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳನ್ನೂ ಹೇಳತೊಡಗಿದರು. ಮಾತ್ರವಲ್ಲ, ತಿರುಪತಿ ವೇಂಕಟಕವಿಗಳು, ಗಾಡೇಪಲ್ಲಿ ವೀರರಾಘವಶಾಸ್ತ್ರಿ, ಗೌರಿಪೆದ್ದಿ ರಾಮಸುಬ್ಬಶರ್ಮಾ, ನರಾಲ ರಾಮಿರೆಡ್ಡಿ ಮುಂತಾದ ಅವಧಾನಿಗಳ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾವಕ್ಕೆ ತೊಡಗಿದರು. ನನಗೆ ಇವರ ಪೈಕಿ ಕೆಲವರನ್ನುಳಿದರೆ ಮಿಕ್ಕವರ ವಿವರಗಳು ಸ್ವಲ್ಪವೂ ತಿಳಿದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ. ಅಗ ತಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಪುಸ್ತಿಕೆಗಳನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದು ಅಲ್ಲಿಯ ಸಮಸ್ಯಾಪೂರಣ ಮತ್ತು ದತ್ತಪದಿಗಳಂಥ ಅಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ಓದಿ ಹೇಳತೊಡಗಿದರು.

Salutations to Vyāsa (Part 2)

In the earlier era, Vedic literature was one large body of wisdom with different ṛṣis having memorized different ṛks and mantras; different mantras had become scattered across different regions of the land. Had this situation continued, over a period of time there would have arisen a possibility of the Vedas getting destroyed; this would have resulted in an impediment to dharma and to culture.

ಅವಧಾನಕಲೆಯ ಕಣ್ವ ಶ್ರೀ ಲಂಕಾ ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿ

ನಾನು ಮತ್ತೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ನೆನೆಯುವ ಮಹನೀಯರ ಪೈಕಿ ಶ್ರದ್ಧೇಯರಾದ ಲಂಕಾ ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿಯವರೂ ಒಬ್ಬರು. ಸತ್ಯನಿಷ್ಠೆ, ಪ್ರತಿಷ್ಠಾಪರಾಙ್ಮುಖತೆ, ಸಮಾಜಸೇವೆ, ಸಾಹಿತ್ಯ-ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗಳ ಸಕ್ರಿಯಾರಾಧನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕುರಿತ ಯಾವ ಪ್ರಸ್ತಾವ ಬಂದಾಗಲೂ ನನಗೆ ತತ್ಕ್ಷಣ ನೆನಪಾಗುವುದು ಲಂಕಾ ಕೃಷ್ಣಮೂರ್ತಿಗಳ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿತ್ವ-ಕೃತಿತ್ವಗಳೇ. ನನ್ನ ಸ್ವಭಾವಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಅವರದ್ದು ಅದೆಷ್ಟೋ ಬಗೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಭಿನ್ನ ಮತ್ತು ಸಮುನ್ನತ. ವಯಸ್ಸು, ತಪಸ್ಸು, ಅನುಭವಗಳ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದಲಂತೂ ನನಗೂ ಅವರಿಗೂ ಅಜ-ಗಜಾಂತರ. ಇಂತಿದ್ದರೂ ಅವರು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಪ್ರೀತಿಯಿಂದ ಆದರಿಸಿದರು, ವಾತ್ಸಲ್ಯದಿಂದ ಅನುಗ್ರಹಿಸಿದರು. ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಆಗ್ರಹ-ಅನುಶಾಸನಗಳ ಸ್ಪರ್ಶವೂ ಜಗತ್ತಿಗೆ ಕಾಣದಂತೆ ಆದರ-ಅಭಿಮಾನಗಳನ್ನು ನನ್ನ ಮೇಲೆ ಸುರಿಸಿದರು.
