Early next morning Śiva came to the maṭha. Mādhava hailed a messenger in the morning and ordered him – “Take this pair of clothes, hand it over to the rāja-purohita Śaṅkara-svāmī and tell him, ‘A prince named Mādhava, having been defeated by his cousins, has come from the Dakṣiṇāpatha, bringing along with him the immense wealth that once belonged to his father. There are other men of royal birth who have come with him as well. He to serve his highness.

ಕಾಳಿದಾಸನ ಪರಿಣತಪ್ರಜ್ಞೆಯ ಫಲವಾದ “ರಘುವಂಶ”ಮಹಾಕಾವ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾವ್ಯಮೀಮಾಂಸೆಯ ಮೌಲ್ಯಗಳು ಸಾಕಷ್ಟಿವೆ. ಅವನು ಮಂಗಳಶ್ಲೋಕದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಲೋಕೋತ್ತರವಾದ ಕಾವ್ಯದರ್ಶನವನ್ನು ಮಾಡಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ:

ವಾಗರ್ಥಾವಿವ ಸಂಪೃಕ್ತೌ ವಾಗರ್ಥಪ್ರತಿಪತ್ತಯೇ |

ಜಗತಃ ಪಿತರೌ ವಂದೇ ಪಾರ್ವತೀಪರಮೇಶ್ವರೌ || (೧.೧)   

ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಅರ್ಥಗಳಂತೆ ಅವಿಭಾಜ್ಯರಾಗಿ ಜಗತ್ತಿನ ಜನನೀಜನಕರೆನಿಸಿದ ಪಾರ್ವತೀ-ಪರಮೇಶ್ವರರನ್ನು  ಮಾತು ಮತ್ತು ಅರ್ಥಗಳ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಿಗಾಗಿ ವಂದಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ.

Caturdārikā-lambaka

मदघूर्णितवक्त्रोत्थैः सिन्दूरैश्छुरयन्महीम्।

हेरम्बः पातु वो विघ्नान् स्वतेजोभिर्दहन्निव॥

ಆರನೆಯ ಅಂಕದಲ್ಲಿ ದುಷ್ಯಂತ ಶಕುಂತಲೆಯ ಭಾವಚಿತ್ರವನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರಿಸುತ್ತಿರುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಅದನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ವಿದೂಷಕ ತನ್ನ ಮೆಚ್ಚುಗೆಯನ್ನು ವ್ಯಕ್ತಪಡಿಸುತ್ತ ಮಧುರಾವಸ್ಥಾನದರ್ಶನೀಯೋ ಭಾವಾನುಪ್ರವೇಶಃ ಎಂದು ಉದ್ಗರಿಸುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಇದಂತೂ ಕಲಾನಿರ್ಮಾಣದೃಷ್ಟಿಯಿಂದ ಅತ್ಯದ್ಭುತವಾದ ಒಳನೋಟ. ಈ ಮಾತಿನ ಸರಳತಾತ್ಪರ್ಯವಿಷ್ಟು: ಶಕುಂತಲೆಯನ್ನು ಚಿತ್ರಿಸುವಾಗ ಅವಳಲ್ಲಿ ದುಷ್ಯಂತನಿಗಿರುವ ಉತ್ಕಟವಾದ ಪ್ರೀತಿಭಾವವು ಆ ಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಕೂಡ ಸೇರಿಹೋಗಿರುವ ಕಾರಣ ಅದು ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಅಂಶದಿಂದಲೂ ಅಂದವಾಗಿದೆ, ಆಕರ್ಷಕವಾಗಿದೆ. ಕಲಾವಿದನು ಕಲಾನಿರ್ಮಾಣಕಾಲದಲ್ಲಿ ತನ್ನ ಇಷ್ಟಾನಿಷ್ಟಗಳನ್ನು ಮೀರಿ ವರ್ಣ್ಯವಸ್ತುವಿನ ಎಲ್ಲ ಅಂಶಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯನ್ನು ಹೊಂದಿ ತನ್ನನ್ನೇ ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ತೆತ್ತುಕೊಳ್ಳದಿದ್ದರೆ ಆ ಕಲಾಕೃತಿಗೆ ಸೌಂದರ್ಯ ಸಿದ್ಧಿಸುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

By then, Śaṅkhacūḍa spotted them from a distance and shouted – ‘O Garuḍa! Don’t, don’t! He is not a nāga, it is me! Why are you suddenly under an illusion?’ Hearing this, Garuḍa was confused and panicked. Jīmūtavāhana was distressed because the task he had taken up did not find completion. From his conversations with Śaṅkhacūḍa, Garuḍa understood that the person he ate was a vidyādhara and was immensely pained.

ಇನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆ “ವಿಕ್ರಮೋರ್ವಶೀಯ”ವನ್ನು ಗಮನಿಸಬಹುದು.

By then she had gotten off the lion and had collected flowers from the lake for the lord’s worship. Pulindaka bowed down to her solemnly. The surprised maiden asked him who he was and how he managed to reach these hazardous regions. He said: ‘O lady, I am a hunter and a devotee of Śiva. I came here to hunt elephants for the pearls embedded in their heads. As soon as I saw you, I remembered Vasudatta, my friend who saved my life. He is the perfect match for you in both looks and youth.

ಮುಂದಿನ ಪದ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಗಣದಾಸನು ತಾನು ಮಾಲವಿಕೆಗೆ ಕಲಿಸಿದ ಪಾಠವನ್ನು ಅವಳು ಮತ್ತೆ ತನಗೆ ಒಪ್ಪಿಸುವಾಗ ಅದು ಆಕೆಯೇ ತನಗೆ ಬೋಧಿಸುವ ಪಾಠದಂತೆ ತೋರುವುದೆಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾನೆ (೧.೫). ಇಲ್ಲಿ “ಭಾವಿಕ” ಎಂಬ ಪದ ಬಳಕೆಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಯಾವುದೇ ಕಲೆಯನ್ನು ಕಲಿಸುವಾಗ ಅದಕ್ಕೊಂದು ಭಾವಪೂರ್ಣತೆ ಅವಶ್ಯ. ಇದೇ “ಭಾವಿಕ” ಎಂಬ ಶಬ್ದದ ಇಂಗಿತ. ಭಾವಪೂರ್ಣತೆಯಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಕಲೆಗೆ ಸ್ವಂತಿಕೆ ಬಾರದು. ಗುರು ಕಲಿಸಿದ್ದು ಶಿಷ್ಯನಲ್ಲಿ ಶುಕಪಾಠದ ಹಾಗೆ ಆಗದಿರಬೇಕೆಂದರೆ ಶಿಷ್ಯನು ತನ್ನ ಕಲಿಕೆಯನ್ನು ಭಾವಿಕತ್ವದ ಮೂಲಕ ಆತ್ಮೀಕರಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಬೇಕು. ಕವಿಯಾದರೂ ಅಷ್ಟೆ, ತನ್ನ ಕಾವ್ಯವನ್ನು ಭಾವನಿರ್ಭರವಾಗಿ ಗುಂಫಿಸಬೇಕು. ಅದನ್ನು ಸಹೃದಯನು ತನ್ನೊಳಗೆ ಪುನಃಸೃಷ್ಟಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಭಾವಪೂರ್ಣತೆ ಅನಿವಾರ್ಯ. ಇಂತಲ್ಲದೆ ರಸವೇ ಸಿದ್ಧಿಸದು.

Piṅgalikā’s Story

“Lady! In the kingdom of Mālava lived a brahmana named Agnidatta. He had two sons named Śaṅkaradatta and Śāntikara. At a very young age Śāntikara left home in his quest of learning. Nobody knew where he went. Śaṅkaradatta married me.

ಶೂದ್ರಕನು ನಾಯಕ-ನಾಯಿಕೆಯರನ್ನು ನಿರ್ದೇಶಿಸಿದ ಬಳಿಕ ತನ್ನ ರೂಪಕದ ವಸ್ತುವನ್ನು ಅದರ ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಂಕೀರ್ಣತೆಯೊಡನೆ ಸೂಚಿಸಿರುವುದು ಅನ್ಯಾದೃಶ. ಮೃಚ್ಛಕಟಿಕವೊಂದು ಪ್ರಕರಣವಾದ ಕಾರಣ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ವೀರರಸಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಅವಕಾಶವಿಲ್ಲ. ಅದೇನಿದ್ದರೂ ನಾಟಕದ ದೈವ-ಮಾನುಷಭೂಮಿಕೆಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಹಜವೆನಿಸಬಲ್ಲ ರಸ. ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರ ಬದುಕಿನಲ್ಲಿ ವೀರಾದ್ಭುತಗಳಿಗಿಂತ ಶೃಂಗಾರ-ಕರುಣ-ಹಾಸ್ಯಗಳೇ ಸಹಜ, ಸಮೃದ್ಧ. ಅದನ್ನೇ “ಸುರತೋತ್ಸವಾಶ್ರಯ” ಎಂಬ ಪದದ ಮೂಲಕ ಶೂದ್ರಕ ಅಭಿವ್ಯಂಜಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ. ಸಂಭೋಗಶೃಂಗಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಹಾಸ್ಯವು ಅಂಗವಾದರೆ ವಿಪ್ರಲಂಭಶೃಂಗಾರಕ್ಕೆ ಕರುಣವು ಅಂಗ. ಹೀಗೆ ಈ ಮೂರು ರಸಗಳ ಮೇಲಾಟವಿಲ್ಲಿರುವುದು ಸ್ವಯಂವೇದ್ಯ. ಪ್ರಣಯಿಗಳ ಪ್ರೀತಿಗೆ ಅಡ್ಡಿಯಾಗುವ ಅಂಶಗಳ “ಖಲಸ್ವಭಾವ” ಮತ್ತು “ವ್ಯವಹಾರದುಷ್ಟತೆ”ಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ತೋರುತ್ತವೆ.
